How do I request a street tree?

The NYC Department of Parks & Recreation (Parks) plants street trees, free-of-charge, on sidewalks in front of houses, apartment buildings and businesses in all five boroughs. To request a free street tree, call 311 or go to:

How do I plant my own street tree?

If you want to select a specific tree species and it is likely that there will be a significant wait. Alternatively, you can hire a private licensed contractor.  The contractor must secure a permit from the Parks Department. Your contractor should be able to advise you on a tree species that meet both the city’s approved street tree species list and is appropriate for your site. Bear in mind factors like size, longevity, sun requirements and care requirements. Before planting your own street tree, you must submit a free permit application to the Parks Department's Central Forestry & Horticulture division.

 

How do I create or enlarge a street tree pit?

To create or enlarge a tree pit before planting, you will need both a NYC Parks Department permit and a utility/ line clearance/pavement breaking permit from the Department of Transportation (DOT). DOT requires a flat fee of $135 for pavement removal to create up to ten street tree pits per block. For more information go to www.nyc.gov/dot.

When is the best time of year to plant a tree?

Trees should be planted in the spring or fall. New York City’s planting seasons are from March 15th to May 30th and October 15th to December 1st (or until the ground freezes).
